Temple University

Honoring Temple's founder, Russell H. Conwell

Temple's Rich History 1 /

Temple University's founder Russell Conwell established Temple College in 1884 after getting a humble start as a minister tutoring working-class community members at night — helping them better their lives through affordable education. More than 130 years later, Temple continues its tradition of offering quality education to people from all classes, bolstered by the generosity of donors.

Temple's official motto — Perseverantia Vincit, or "Perseverance Conquers" — has stood the test of time for decades. It signifies an unending dedication to providing motivated and talented students from all backgrounds with an education rooted in excellence.

When Temple College was chartered and incorporated by the state in 1888, the cost of regular tuition was free, geared toward the working men and women of North Philadelphia. More than a century later, Temple is able to provide affordable education to all classes, thanks to the generous gifts of dedicated Temple alumni, foundations and organizations, and other donors.

Temple's first commencement was held in June 1892, graduating 18 students, four of whom were women.

Hooter the Owl is not just Temple's nocturnal mascot, but also a tribute in honor of the humble beginnings of the university, when ambitious young people (called the "night owls") met for free night classes under the leadership of their tutor Russell Conwell, who would go on to become Temple's first president.

"Greatness consists not in holding some office; greatness really consists in doing some great deed with little means, in the accomplishment of vast purposes from the private ranks of life, that is true greatness." — Russell Conwell, in his famous speech, "Acres of Diamonds"

Temple's founder and first president, Russell Conwell, made his mark as an attorney, a journalist and author, and as a minister and great orator. His most lasting legacy has been as an educator.

Presidents Barack Obama and Harry S. Truman, as well as Martin Luther King Jr., are among the notable dignitaries who have spoken at Temple throughout the university's rich history.

"The owl of the night makes the eagle of the day," — Russell Conwell, encouraging the young night students he tutored in 1888, who would later become the first class of students at Temple College.

In 2015, more than 80% of Temple's full-time undergraduates received some form of financial aid, and more than 50% received need-based scholarships or grants.

In Fiscal Year 2013, more than 40,000 donors contributed nearly $68M towards support for students, research and faculty, campus development, community programs, the Temple Fund, and other philanthropic areas.
